NDIS Guide
An NDIS support item number looks like a string of digits and underscores on an invoice, and it is easy to ignore until a payment gets held up. This guide explains what an NDIS support item number is, where it comes from, how to look one up, and what to check when one appears on an invoice for you or your child. If you are new to invoices, our guide to NDIS invoice requirements shows the other details every invoice needs.
Facts checked against NDIS.gov.au on 19 September 2026. The NDIS is updating its website for new NDIS laws, so check the latest catalogue and pricing schedule before you rely on a number or a price.
What is an NDIS support item number?
Every support that a provider can claim has an entry in the NDIS support catalogue, and each entry has a number. That number tells the plan manager, or the NDIA, exactly which support was delivered. People often call it a line item number or an NDIS code. The NDIS calls it the support item number, or support item reference number.
The NDIS lists the support item number as a required detail. To make a payment claim, it says a provider needs the participant’s name, the participant’s reference number or NDIS number, the dates of support, the support item reference number and the support item price. Its record keeping rules also say an invoice needs the support item number listed in the NDIS support catalogue. See the NDIS pages on getting paid and record keeping requirements.
What the NDIS support catalogue lists for each item
The NDIS says the support catalogue lists all available NDIS supports that providers can use when requesting a payment. It gives the appropriate maximum price for each item, and shows which claim type applies. It should be used together with the NDIS pricing schedule.
01
Names and numbers
Registration group numbers and names, and support category numbers and names.
02
Prices
Appropriate maximum prices, including prices for remote and very remote areas.
03
Claiming details
The claim period, and whether a quote is required for the item.
04
Claiming guidance
Guidance on claiming non-face-to-face support, travel and irregular supported independent living, plus short notice cancellations and reports.
Prices are set out in the NDIS pricing schedule, which took effect on 1 July 2026. The NDIS explains how it works on its page about the support catalogue.
How to look up an NDIS support item number
You do not need to memorise numbers. If you want to check one, the process takes a few minutes.
Step 1
Download the current catalogue
On the NDIS page about the support catalogue, download the 2026-27 catalogue. It is a spreadsheet (XLSX), so you need Excel or a similar program to open it.
Step 2
Search by the name of the support
Use the search or filter function in your spreadsheet program and type a word from the support, such as “plan management” or “behaviour”. Each row is one support item.
Step 3
Read across the row
Check the item number, the name, the support category, the registration group, the unit (for example hour or month), the appropriate maximum price and the claim type. Note whether a quote is required.
Step 4
Match it to the invoice
Compare the number, the description, the unit and the price on the invoice with the catalogue. If anything does not match, ask the provider to explain or to send a corrected invoice.
What support item numbers look like
Each number is written as five groups of digits separated by underscores. The table shows four examples from the official NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits 2025-26. Numbers and names can change when the NDIS publishes new pricing, so always check the current catalogue.
| Support item number | Support item name (2025-26) | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| 14_034_0127_8_3 | Plan Management – Monthly Fee | Month |
| 01_701_0128_1_3 | Assessment Recommendation Therapy or Training | Hour |
| 10_054_0128_5_3 | Employment Related Assessment, Counselling | Hour |
| 11_022_0110_7_3 | Specialist Behavioural Intervention Support | Hour |
The first row is the item that covers plan management. It is a monthly fee, and in 2025-26 it was $104.45 a month. Plan management is funded by the NDIA, so it does not reduce the money for your other supports. Our guide to NDIS plan management fees explains how it works.
Why a wrong number holds up payment
A plan manager checks that each claim is in line with your plan, your budget and NDIS supports, and that it meets NDIS compliance requirements. The NDIS also says providers need to make sure their claims are accurate and in line with the funding approved in your plan. An item number that does not match the support, or that is missing, is one of the simplest reasons for a claim to be queried.
If that happens, the usual fix is a corrected invoice. If a payment goes wrong after an invoice is approved, see our guide to an NDIS plan manager payment error. To compare how plan managers handle invoices, read our comparison of NDIS plan managers.

You are not expected to be an expert. These checks catch most problems before an invoice reaches your plan manager:
- Is there a support item number on every line?
- Does the description match the support you actually received?
- Does the unit match, such as hours for a session or a month for a monthly fee?
- Is the price at or below the appropriate maximum price in the catalogue?
- Does the agreed rate in your NDIS service agreement match what you were charged?
Your plan manager gets your approval before submitting claims, so this is your chance to catch a mistake. For more on what plan managers do, see what an NDIS plan manager does, and to make sure yours is registered, read are NDIS plan managers registered.
Frequently Asked Questions About NDIS Support Item Numbers
What is an NDIS support item number?
It is the reference number for a specific NDIS support in the NDIS support catalogue. It identifies exactly which support a provider delivered, and it has to appear on invoices and payment claims.
Where can I find a list of NDIS support item numbers?
The NDIS publishes the support catalogue on its website. The 2026-27 catalogue is a spreadsheet you can download from the NDIS page about the support catalogue, and it should be read together with the NDIS pricing schedule.
Is a support item number the same as a line item number?
Yes, in everyday use. Many providers and plan managers say line item or NDIS code. The NDIS itself uses the term support item number, or support item reference number.
Do I need to know my support item numbers as a participant?
No. Your provider selects the number and your plan manager checks the claim. It helps to know where to find the catalogue so you can check an invoice if something looks wrong.
What if my provider uses the wrong support item number?
Ask them to explain it and to send a corrected invoice before it is paid. Your plan manager may query the claim until the number matches the support. You can compare how providers handle this in our NDIS plan manager comparison.
Do support item numbers stay the same every year?
The NDIS publishes the catalogue alongside its pricing schedule, and the current version is the 2026-27 catalogue. Numbers and names can change, so check the current catalogue rather than an old list.
Does every support item have a maximum price?
The catalogue gives the appropriate maximum price for each support item, along with prices for remote and very remote areas. Some items may require a quote, which the catalogue also shows.
